Sathyaraj (born Rangaraj Subbiah), an Indian actor, director, and producer working mostly in the Tamil film industry, was born on October 3, 1954, in Coimbatore, India. When he was young, he was a big fan of M.G. Ramachandran and Rajesh Khanna. Despite his mother being firmly against his dream to become an actor, Sathyaraj moved to Chennai. His first film in a credited role was ‘Sattam En Kaiyll’ (1978). Sathyaraj’s first role as a leading man was in the successful ‘Saavi’ (1985). In the early part of his career, he often played minor villains. From 1984, Sathyaraj was directed by his college friend Manivannan in twenty-five films until 2013. Some of these films were ‘January 1’ (1984), ’24 Mani Neram’ (1984), ‘Nooravathu Naal’ (1984), ‘Needhiyin Nizhal’ (1985), ‘Kadalora Kavithaigal’ (1986), playing a romantic leading man, ‘Mr. Bharath’ (1986). ‘’Vedham Pudhithu’ (1987), won the Best Tamil Actor Award – Filmfare Awards South, and ‘Vaathiyaar Veettu Pillai’ (1989), his 100th film.  In the 90s, he did more comedies and action films like ‘Nadigan’ (1990). In the early 2000s, he had a rough patch with unsuccessful films. In 2004, Sathyarai acted with his son Sibiraj in ‘Jore’, and they then acted in three other films together. Other successful films in this period ‘Periyar’ (2007) and ‘Onbadhu Roobai Nottu’ (2007). By the 2010s, Sathvaraj started playing supporting roles as a professor in ‘Nanban’ (2012), and in father roles in ‘Sankham’ (2009/Telugu), and ‘Mirchi’ (2012/Telugu). Then came the role Sathyaraj is known throughout India for, ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ (2015) and ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ (2017), as the character Kattappa. In recent times, he has been in some very successful films, such as ‘Mersal’ (2017), ‘Jersey’ (2019), ‘Thambi’ (2019), ‘Theerpugal Virkapadum’ (2021), ‘Radhe Shyam) (2022/Hindi), and ‘Love Today’.
