Happy Birthday to Karan Johar, well known director, screen writer and producer of some of Bollywood’s high grossing hits, born on May 25, 1972, in Mumbai. He began his career as an assistant director and a bit actor in 1995 in the iconic ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’. Karan has directed four highly successful films each starring Shah Rukh Khah: ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998), he won the Filmfare Best Director Award, and the National Award for Best Film for Providing Wholesome Entertainment, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001), ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ (2006), and ‘My Name is Khan’ (2010), also winning the Filmfare Best Director Award. The son of producer Yash Johar, after his father’s death Karan took the reins of Dharma Productions. Dharma Productions has gone out of its’ way to introduce new actors and directors to the Bollywood scene. In 2012, Karan introduced Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, and Varun Dhawan in ‘Student of the Year’. Karan is also the host of the popular ‘Koffee with Karan’ television show, where he interviews top celebrities. He is also a judge on the popular dance show ‘Jhalak Dikhhia Jaa’ and ‘India’s Got Talent’. Karan wrote, directed, and produced ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ in 2016, starring Aishwarya Rai, Anushka Sharma, and Ranbir Kapoor. In recent times, he has produced ‘Kapoor & Sons’ (2016), ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ (2017), ‘Raazi’ (2018), ‘Simmba’ (2018), Kesari (2019), and ‘Good Newwz’ (2019). Unfortunately, ‘Kalank’ (2019), an expensive big star cast film which he produced, was a disappointment. In 2020, Karan did a reality show for Netflix called ‘What the Love!’. He mentors six single people on their way to finding love. Karan is a gay man, and has two children through surrogacy, Yash and Roohi.
