Prakash Jha, Indian director, screenwriter, and producer, born on February 27, 1952, in West Champaran, Bihar. Prakash started his career in 1975 making documentaries such as ‘Under the Blue’. Many of his documentaries were about controversial political subjects. In 1984, he made his debut as a feature film director in ‘Hip Hip Hurray’. Prakash’s next film ‘Damul’ (1984), won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie. The subject of this film was bonded labor in rural Bihar and highlighted the oppression of the lower castes. Over his career, he has made many award-winning documentaries, and nine feature films, including ‘Raajneeti’ (2010), ‘Aarakshan’ (2011), ‘Chakravyuh’ (2012), ‘Satyagraha’ (2013), and ‘Jai Gangaajal’ (2016) starring Priyanka Chopra. Prakash was recently seen acting in ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ (2019), a critically acclaimed biopic of two sixty-year-old sharpshooting champions who overcame the old traditions that oppressed them. In 2020, Prakash directed the web-series ‘Aashram’ for MX Player and Prakash Jha Productions. It is a crime drama exposing the dark side of faith starring Bobby Deol. In 2022, Prakash played a daily-wage laborer in ‘Matto Ki Saikil’. In 2023, Prakash was seen in a supporting role in ‘Rafuchakkar’, a heist comedy web series on JioCinema. He has his own production company, Prakash Jha Productions, and is the chairman of Anubhooti, an organization working for the development of farmers and poor people in Bihar since 1991.
