Saroj Khan, acclaimed Bollywood choreographer, born on November 22, 1948, in Mumbai. Saroj started her career as a three-year old dancer in ‘Nazarana’ and later became a background dancer. At the age of twelve, Saroj became an assistant to B. Sohanlal, a Bollywood choreographer. Sohanial married her when she was only thirteen and pregnant. The marriage did not last. In 1975, Saroj married a Mumbai businessman Sardar Roshan Khan. She leaves behind four children.  She struggled in the male dominated field for many years before working with the likes of Sridevi dancing to ‘Hawa Hawai’ in ‘Mr. India’ (1987), and Madhuri Dixit dancing to ‘Ek Do Teen’ in ‘Tezaab’ (1988), and ‘Dola Re Dola’ from ‘Devdas’ (2002). Saroj has won the Filmfare Best Choreography Award for ‘Guru’ (2008), ‘Devdas’ (2003), ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ (2000), among others. It is said Filmfare created its’ first Best Choreography Award after seeing “Ek Do Teen’. Saroj won eight Filmfare Awards, the most of any other choreographer, and, three National Film Awards for Best Choreography, also a record.  Saroj Khan died of a heart attack in Mumbai on July 3, 2020.
