Vindhu Vinod Chopra is an Indian screenwriter, director, and producer, born on September 5, 1954, in Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir, India. Born into a family of filmmakers, Vindhu was a student at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. His first film, ‘Murder at Monkey Hill’ (1976), a black-and-white thriller, won a National Film Award for Best Short Experimental Film. His second was a documentary that focused on India’s impoverished children, ‘Encounter with Faces’ (1979).  This film was nominated for an Academy Award in the Documentary Short Subject category. Along with fellow student, Naseeruddin Shah, Vindhu wrote, acted, and directed ‘Sazaye Maut’, which he adapted from ‘Murder at Monkey Hill’ into his first feature film.  Some of Vindhu’s awarding-winning films are: ‘Parinda’ (1989), a Filmfare Award for Best Director, ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ (2003, producer), National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film and Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay, ‘Lage Raho Mumma Bhai’(2006, producer), a National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and a Filmfare Award for Best Story, ‘3 Idiots’ (2009, producer), a National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Filmfare Award for Best Film and Best Screenplay.  Other successful films of his: ‘Khamosh’ (1985),’1942: A Love Story’ (1994), ‘Mission Kashmir’ (2000), ‘Parineeta’ (2005), ‘PK’ (2014), and the Sanjay Dutt biopic, ‘Sanju’, the top-grossing film of 2018. His most recent productions are ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ (2019), and ‘Shikara’ (2020) which he wrote and directed.  He is married to film critic and author Anupama Chopra.
