Jayam Ravi, born Ravi Mohan, is an Indian actor working in the Tamil film industry, born on September 10, 1980, in Tirumangalam, Tamil Nadu, India. His father, A. Mohan, is a veteran film editor, screenwriter and producer. Jayam studied Bharatnatyam, a classical dance, as a child, and acted in three films that his father had produced. After a short turn as an assistant director, he decided to become an actor. Jayam’s elder brother , Mohan Raja, is a film director who launched Jayam’s career with a 2003 remake of a successful Telugu film ‘Jayam’, a romantic action film. The film was a sleeper hit which prompted the actor to make Jayam his stage name. His next film, co-starring Asin, was a family entertainer, ‘M.Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi’ (2004). The film received the Tamil Nadu State Film Special Award for Best Film and Jayam won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. Other well-known films are ‘’Daas’ (2005), ‘Unakkum Enakkum’ (2006), ‘Santhosh Subramaniam’ (2008), ‘Dhaam Dhoom’ (2008), ‘Ameerin Aadhi-Bhagavan’ (2013), ‘Thani Oruvan’ (2015) won Best Actor (Critics) – South Filmfare, ‘Bhooloham’ (2015), ‘Miruthan’ (2016), ‘Tik Tik Tik’ (2018), ‘Adanga Maru’ (2018), ‘Comali’ (2019), and ‘Bhoomi’ (OTT/2021). In 2022, Jayam starred as the man who became Chola prince Raja Raja 1, in Mani Ratnam’s epic drama ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’. The film was a blockbuster, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2022 and winning many awards, including four National Awards for Best Tamil Film, Best Cinematography, Best Background Score, and Best Sound Design. In ‘Ponniyin Selvan: II’ (2023), Jayam won praise for his role as he fights and ascends to the throne, and the film becomes the third highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023.
