Kalki Koechlin, an unconventional Bollywood actress, and writer, born on January 10, 1984, to French parents living in Pondicherry, India. Kalki worked in theater and studied drama at the University of London. In 2009, she received a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in ‘Dev D’, a modern-day take on ‘Devdas’. Kalki married director Anurag Kashyap in 2011 (they divorced in 2015). Anurag co-wrote and directed, and Kalki starred in ‘That Girl in Yellow Boots’, a thriller set on the dark side of Mumbai. She then played supporting roles in two big commercial comedy dramas, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ (2011) and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ (2013). Kalki won a National Film Award – Special Jury Award in 2014, for ‘Margarita with a Straw’, playing a young woman with cerebral palsy. Two independent movies of note are ‘Waiting’ (2014) and ‘A Death in the Gunj’ (2016). In 2017, Kalki appeared in a documentary film on the relationship between Pakistan and India called ‘Azmaish: A Journey Through the Subcontinent’. In 2019, she played the part of an American in ‘Gully Boy’. She was seen in the Tamil anthology about honor killing, ‘Paava Kadhaigal’ in 2020. Her last appearance was in the coming-of-age drama ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ (2023). She has also participated in these web series: ‘Made in Heaven’, ‘Sacred Games’, and ‘Bhram’. Kalki is also actively involved with theater, both in acting and writing. She campaigns for causes such as gender equality, women’s safety awareness, and creating awareness regarding disability issues.
