Rekha (born Bhanurakhi Ganesan) is an iconic Indian actress, born on October 10, 1954, in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. Rekha started acting at the age of eleven in ‘Rangula Ratnam’ (Telugu), and as a lead in ‘Sawan Bhadon’ (1970). The turning point in her career came when she played a rape victim in ‘Ghar’ (1978) a social drama. Although she was not known for her looks, by the late 1970s, Rekha had become a sex symbol. She has appeared in 180-plus films in the last four decades. She has two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for her roles in ‘Khubsoorat’ (1980) and ‘Khoon Bhari Maang” (1988), and a Best Supporting Actress Award for ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi’ (1996). In her most famous film, she plays a courtesan with a heart of gold. “Umrao Jaan” made in 1981, won Rekha a National Film Award for Best Actress.  While she is seen often on award shows and red carpets, she only rarely appears in films now.  Rekha was seen in ‘Super Nani’ (2014), as a grandmother and wife who is taken for granted. Rakha appeared as herself in 2015’s ‘Shamitabh’. She was last seen in ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se’ (2018).
