Udit Narayan, renowned playback singer, was born on December 1, 1955, in Baisi, Supaul district, Bihar, India. His father, a farmer, was a Nepalese national; his mother, a folk singer, was an Indian national. Considered one of the best playback singers of the 1990s and 2000s, Udit began his career singing for Radio Nepal and in the Nepali film ‘Sindur’. In 1978 Udit moved to Bombay on a music scholarship to study classical music. He has sung over 25,000 songs in more than 31 languages to date. Over the years, Udit has collaborated with many Bollywood music directors creating a rich legacy of memorable songs, some examples are: ‘Papa Kahte Hai’ (QSQT 1989), ‘Jaadu Teri Nazar’ (Darr 1994), ‘Mehandi Lagake Rakhna’ (DDLJ 1996), ‘Tum Paas Aaye’ (KKHH 1999), ‘Chand Chupa Badal Mein’ (HDDCS 2000), ‘Jaane Kyon Log’ (Dil Chahta Hai 2001), ‘Mitwa’ (Lagaan 2002), ‘Chote Chote Sapne Ho’ (Zindagi Khoobsoorat Hai 2002), ‘Yeh Taara Who Taara’ (Swades 2005), and ‘Radha’ (Student of the Year 2013). Udit has been the singing voice of many top Bollywood stars, including Amitabh Bachchan, Dev Anand, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Ajay Devgn. In 2009, the Government of India presented Udit with the Padma Shri, and in 2016, the Padma Bhushan. He has won four National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. Udit has one son, Aditya Narayan, also a playback singer.
