Manish Malhotra, fashion designer to the stars of Bollywood, was born December 5, 1965, in Bombay, India. Manish became interested in design at the age of fourteen while preparing for his brother’s wedding. Currently the top designer in the Hindi film industry, Manish has designed for Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Kajol, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Sonakshi Sinha, etc. Manish also works in the Telugu, Tamil, and Hollywood industries. His designs often create a personal “look” for a character throughout a film. His first venture into costume designing came in ‘Swarg’ (1999). Manish is best known for designing Urmila Matondkar’s wardrobe in ‘Rangeela’(1996), for which he won the first Filmfare Award for Costume Design. Manish also won the first IIFA Best Costume Award for ‘Mohabbatein’ in 2001. Other award-winning movies include: ’Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1999), ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ (2002), ‘Veer Zaara’ (2005), and ‘Kabhi alvida Na Kehna’ (2007). He has also won a Filmfare Awards South for Costume Design for ‘Enthiran’ (2010). Recently, Manish has designed costumes for ‘Dhadak’, ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, and ‘Fanney Khan’ in 2018, ‘Kalank’ and ‘Student of the Year 2’ in 2019, ‘Ghost Stories’ in 2020, ‘Radhe’ in 2021, and ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kil Prem Kahaani’ in 2023. Manish often collaborates with charities, such as Save the Girl Child and the Mijwan Welfare Society, by using his collections as a draw for fund-raising. He is also known for promoting regional Indian handicrafts.
