Born on June 22, 1932 in Lahore, Punjab, Amrish Puri was an iconic Indian actor. He died at the age of 72, on January 12, 2005 in Mumbai, from a blood clot to the brain. Amrish had two older brothers who were actors, but he failed his first screen test and went on to work for the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation. In his free time, he began acting in the theater and became a successful stage actor. Theater work led to television work and eventually films at the late age of 40. Featured in over 400 films since 1970, his deep baritone set him apart from other villains of the day. In India, he is best known for playing Mogambo in the 1987 superhit ‘Mr. India’, and as Kajol’s father in ‘DDLJ’ (1995). Internationally, Amrish was the villain in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ known as Mola Ram.
