Govinda (born Govind Arun Ahuja), a Bollywood actor and former politician, was born on December 21, 1963, in Virar (a northern Mumbai suburb). Govinda’s father was an actor, Arun Kumar Ahuja, and his mother was a singer/actress Nirmala Devi. Obsessed with the film ‘Disco Dancer’, Govinda practiced dancing for hours and began promoting himself by circulating a tape around the industry. In 1986, he landed a leading role in ‘Tan-Badan’, then appeared in a song called ‘I Am a Street Dancer’ in the successful film ‘Ilzaam’, establishing him as a dancing star. In the next three-and-a-half decades, Govinda appeared in over 150 films. His popularity reached its height in the 1990s in such films as: ‘Awaargi’ (1990), ‘Zulm Ki Hukumat’ (1992), ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ (1992), ‘Aankhen’ (1993), ‘Coolie No. 1’ (1995), and ‘Hero No.1’ (1997). In 2003, Govinda took a break from films and entered politics. He returned to films in 2006 with ‘Bhagam Bhag’, a multi-starrer. He also succeeded with ‘Partner’ (2007), and ‘Life Partner’ (2009). More recently, Govinda has been seen in ‘Kil Dil’, ‘Happy Ending’ (2014), ‘Aa Gaya Hero’ (2017), and playing a double role in ‘Rangeela Raja’ (2019). Govinda has appeared in over 165 films in his career.
