Happy Birthday to Sonam Kapoor, Bollywood actress and fashionista, born on June 9, 1985, in Mumbai. Sonam is a member of a filmy Kapoor clan and is the daughter of well-known actor Anil Kapoor, sister of actor Harshvardhan Kapoor and producer Rhea Kapoor. She started her career as an assistant to Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the film ‘Black’ in 2005. Bhansali encouraged her to lose weight and two years later Sonam made her debut in ‘Saawariya’, along with Ranbir Kapoor. The film was unsuccessful but Sonam went on to win a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She had several unsuccessful films in the following years until she had a breakthrough with ‘Raanjhanaa’ (2013), co-starring Danush, and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, as the love interest of Farhan Akhtar. Other films include: ‘Khoobsurat’ (2014) with Fawad Khan, ‘Dolly Ki Doli’ (2015) with Rajkumar Rao, and ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ (2015) with Salman Khan. Sonam’s best role to date has been the biopic ‘Neerja’ (2016). She played air hostess Neerja Bhanot, who became a hero saving passengers on a hijacked Pan Am Flight in 1986. Sonam won several awards for her portrayal including a Filmfare Award Best Actress (Critics) and Special Mention – National Film Awards. Other films Sonam has appeared in are ‘Veere Di Wedding’, a buddy comedy; ‘Padman’, co-starring Akshay Kumar; and Sanjay Dutt’s biopic ‘Sanju’ in 2018, and ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dokha Toh Aisa Laga’ and ‘The Zoya Factor’ in 2019. In 2020, Sonam appeared as herself in ’AK vs. AK. In May 2018, Sonam married Anand Ahuja, an Indian businessman.
