Subhash Ghai is an Indian movie producer, director, and screenwriter, born on January 24, 1945, in Nagpur. Ghai joined the film industry in 1969 acting in small roles. In 1976, Ghai made his debut directing the hit film ‘Kalicharan’, starring Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy. Since then, he has directed seventeen other movies including Ram Lakhan, Saudagar, Khalnayak, Pardes, and Taal. These have all been nominated for Filmfare Best Film Awards. In 1998, Ghai won the Filmfare Best Screenplay Award for ‘Pardes’, a film starring Shah Rukh Khan and newcomer Mahima Chaudhary. In 1982, Ghai founded his own film production company, Mukta Arts. He is the producer of such movies as: ‘Kisna: The Warrior Poet’ (2005), ‘Iqbal’ (2005) National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues, ‘36 China Town’ (2006),’ Black & White’ (2008), and ‘Yuvvraaj’ (2008). The last movie he directed was ‘Kaanchi: The Unbreakable’ in 2014. In 2015, Ghai received the IIFA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema. In 2006, Ghai founded Whistling Woods International Institute for Films, Media, Animation, and Media Arts, a state-of-the-art film institute in Mumbai. He currently serves as Whistling Woods chairman.
