Bolly Flashback:  Sunil Dutt, born Balraj Dutt on June 6, 1928, in the Punjab Province of British India, was an Indian actor, director, producer and politician.  Sunil was actor Sanjay Dutt’s father and the husband of Hindi movie star Nargis. Sunil started his career in radio and made his film debut in 1955 in ‘Railway Platform’. Sunil is best known for his role in 1957’s iconic film, ‘Mother India’, the classic story of Radha, a villager oppressed and in debt to an evil money lender. Sunil played Birju, Radha’s angry and rebellious son, who eventually becomes a bandit. It is said that Sunil won the love of Nargis after he saved her from a fire that had broken out on the set. They were married in 1958.  Sunil was most active in the 1950s and 1960s, altogether making over 100 films. Some of his best films were: ‘Sujata’ (1959), ‘Waqt’ (1965), ‘Padosan’ (1968), and ‘Hamraaz’ (1967). He introduced his son Sanjay to Bollywood in ‘Rocky’ in 1981, and the last film he appeared in was Sanjay’s most popular ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ (2004). He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1968. Sunil also received several Lifetime Achievement Awards from various organizations including one from Filmfare in 1995. Sunil represented North-West Mumbai for the Congress Party in the 1980s and 90s and was noted for his efforts on behalf of slum dwellers living there. He was the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Manmohan Singh government at the time he died on May 25, 2005.  Paresh Rawal played the role of Sunil Dutt in Sanju, Sanjay Dutt’s biopic.
