Vishal Bhardwaj is an Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, music composer, and playback singer, born on August 4, 1965, in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, India. Vishal, whose father wrote poetry and lyrics for Hindi films, composed a song used in the film ‘Yaar Kasam’ (1985), at the age of seventeen. After college in Delhi, he married Rekha, a playback singer, and moved to Mumbai to pursue a career as a music composer. Vishal made his music debut with ‘Abhay’, a children’s film in 1995. In 1996, he received the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent as the music director for Gulzar’s ‘Maachis’. He has won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for ‘Godmother’ (2000), ‘Ishqiya’ (2011), and ‘Haider’ (2015). Vishal made his debut as a director with ‘Makdee’ (2002), a horror film. Vishal is best known for his adaptations of three of William Shakespeare’s plays: ‘Maqbool’ (Macbeth 2003), ‘Omkara’ (Othello 2006), and the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film (2006). ‘Kaminey’ (2010), and ‘Talvar’ (2016). His latest films were ‘Rangoon’ (2017), which starred Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, and Saif Ali Khan, set during WW2, it revolved around the character of a stuntwoman, and ‘Pataakha’ (2018). Vishal produced, directed, wrote, and made all the music for these films. Vishal produces his films under VB Pictures. In 2022, Vishal wrote and directed an episode of ‘Modern Love: Mumbai’ an anthology series for Amazon Prime, and he has done two songs in Alia Bhatt’s ‘Darlings’ on Netflix.
